Use a running sinker set-up with a leader of 75-100 cm with 4/0 Octopus or Octopus Circle hooks. Bets baits are pilchards, filleted or cubed, US squid, saury and fresh fish fillets. Pinkies to 35 school up at this time of year and move east towards the mouth of the Tarwin River but don’t be surprised to hook fish to 70 cm this year.
You will locate them between Mahers Landing and Nolans Bluff. Pinkie Snapper enter Anderson Inlet in late November and early December. Rod Bending Tip: When using pipi, ensure the guts (black stuff) of the pipi is positioned on the tip of the hook. (remember using circle hooks,don’t strike as you will pull the hook) The best time is the last of the run out tide and the beginning of the run in. Red long shank size 6 is the best hook size but the KL 1/0 light circle is gaining popularity if the rod is in a holder. If the whiting are tentative on the bite, a running sinker rig may be a better option. When using bass yabbies, a paternoster rig is preferred. Frozen pipi, tenderised squid strips, mussel and worm can be used as well. The best bait is live bass yabbies and fresh pipi. King George Whiting enjoy the weed beds between Pensioners Corner and the Old Kiosk Café, at Stevies Gutter and the bottom of the horseshoe at Doyles Rd, to the east of the Inverloch boat ramp and off the shell banks at Mahers Landing. Pause between twitches keeping the line tight. Land based, the sand flats from the angling club to the mouth of Screw Creek is a great area to target Flathead as well as Doyles Rd on the Venus Bay side.
Cast and allow your rigged soft plastic to fall to the bottom and with very short twitches, retrieve keeping the soft plastic close to the bottom. The use of soft plastics allows you to walk and fish a greater area of the sand flats. Fish the run out tide as they will move from the shallows as the water depth decreases.
